Sincerely, Ric is the life story Ric Routledge left behind.
After Ric passed, we cleared out a long forgotten Indiana storage unit. Inside were dog show tapes from around the world, an autobiographical novel he recorded to cassette, and the photographs he carried through his entire life.
Ric was one of my earliest friends. Without knowing it, he left me the raw material to make a film about him. All that remained was to track down the people who knew him and confront my own fear of directing my first feature.
So I did.
The result was twofold. A feature documentary about one of the dog world's greatest unsung figures. And a personal creative reckoning. I had spent years editing other people's stories. This was the first one I had to tell myself. I'm proud that, together, Ric and I made something honest and redemptive.
